Part 3.  Astrotheology

Those who finish their investigation of Freemasonry at the level of understanding presented in Part 2 of this series will always fall short of the truth.  The next level of understanding can only be reached by looking deeper into the history of religion, to a time before the Bible was written when the movements of the planets and stars in the sky were thought to control events on earth.  During the restoration work at the Andaz Hotel in London engineers were completely surprised to stumble across a hidden room.  After they removed one of the walls they found a wood-panelled antechamber and, on the other side of a studded double door, a vast and incredibly refined Masonic temple [1].  The ceiling of the temple is decorated with a five pointed star radiating light, which is surrounded by the signs of the zodiac used in astrology; a ladder leads to the centre.

The men at the top of Freemasonry understand that ancient religious myths have always had a hidden meaning for those who understand the symbolism (metaphor), which is completely different from the messages preached to the common people by priests or imams.  Morals and Dogma author Albert Pike makes this clear about the Bible, when he writes of “the absurd reading of the established Church, taking literally the figurative, allegorical, and mythical language of a collection of Oriental books of different ages”. Pike explains “The symbols of the wise always become the idols of the ignorant multitude.”

Freemasons have always used symbols to represent their knowledge, the Masonic symbols above are on the west wall at Pollokshields Burgh Halls, Glasgow.  They include the sun, moon and stars.

Lucifer is the King James Bible Version rendering of the Hebrew word הֵילֵל in Isaiah14:12. This word occurs only once in the Hebrew Bible and Isaiah uses it to represent a king of Babylon as a morning star fallen from heaven, which is an image he is generally believed to have borrowed from a legend in Canaanite mythology.  Only after Isaiah was written, did pre-Christian Jews interpret it as the story of Satan, presenting the Devil as a fallen angel cast out of heaven. Christian tradition, influenced by the earlier Jewish presentation, came to use Lucifer as the name for Satan as he was before his fall from heaven.  As a result, Lucifer has become a by-word for Satan in popular culture today.

According to Strong's Concordance הֵילֵל  means "shining one, morning star, Lucifer".  The LatinVulgate translates הֵילֵל as lucifer, meaning "the morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing".  The Septuagint renders הֵילֵל in Greek as ἑωσφόρος (heōsphoros), a name, literally "bringer of dawn", for the morning star. [2]

Lucifer the Lightbearer was a journal published by Moses Harman in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  According to Harman the name was chosen because "Lucifer, the ancient name of the Morning Star, now called Venus, seems to us unsurpassed as a cognomen for a journal whose mission is to bring light to the dwellers in darkness." [3]

The planet Venus is the brightest natural object in the night sky, after the moon.  It reaches its maximum brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset, and was referred to by ancient cultures as the Morning Star or Evening Star [5].  As the Morning Star in the east it heralds the coming of sun rise and is consequently said to be the bringer of light; Lucifer (the planet Venus) is therefore known as the light bearer.  When the position of Venus at its maximum height before dawn each day is plotted, the planet is seen to rise and then fall, hence it was referred to in ancient times as a star fallen from heaven.

Path of Venus

When Albert Pike wrote about Lucifer the light bearer in Morals and Dogma he was using a symbol, or code word, for the planet Venus; he knew that only the ignorant multitude take the bible literally.  Biblical characters being personifications of actual planets and stars is known as Astrotheology or Astrolotry [6] and makes perfect sense when you realise that the bible is a re-working of earlier beliefs.  The first civilised cultures identified planets and stars with gods and spirits. They related these objects (and their movements) to events such as rain, drought, seasons, and tides. It is generally believed that the first professional astronomers were priests, and that their understanding of the heavens was seen as divine. Ancient structures with astronomical alignments, such as Stonehenge, probably fulfilled both astronomical and religious functions [7].  MasonicWorld.com carries comment on an article by Russell A. Herner entitled "Stonehenge: An Ancient Masonic Temple" [8] which describes the perceived link between Freemasons and the ancients who built stone circles.  The giant stone circle of Stonehenge aligns most prominently to sunrise on the longest day of the year. On this day the sun rises over the Heel Stone outside the circle, and shines directly on to the altar stone in the centre.

The orbit of Venus explains the secret meaning of the pentagram.  Using the current understanding of the solar system, with the sun in the centre, the points where Venus catches up and passes Earth (conjunction points) form a pentagram when joined.  Ancient astronomers believed that the earth was at the centre of the universe and all the planets revolved around it; if you use this ancient earth centred model to draw the observed path of Venus it forms a 5 petal, pentagram pattern, rose.  In the video below the Sun is yellow, Earth is blue and Venus is green. The video includes a third pentagram pattern, which is generated by joining the positions on Venus’ orbit where the same point on Venus’ surface faces us on earth.

Is it not just coincidence that the people who created the Church of Satan and the Order of the Eastern Star both chose the symbol of Venus as a logo.  Nor is it coincidence that the secret Masonic temple at the Andaz Hotel has a five pointed star in the centre of the ceiling.  The symbology of Venus is summarised below:

Can it be that the truth which Freemasons swear to protect on threat of death is the true identity of biblical characters? Is Freemasonry a secret society of astronomer priests? In Part 4 the secret religious beliefs, upon which Freemasonic rituals are based, will be explained and the little known and surprising origin of all the world’s religions will be revealed.
