In a crass 2008 episode, the pair left obscene messages on the answering machine of Andrew Sachs, the actor who once played the waiter Manuel in Fawlty Towers. The head of Radio 2, who authorised the broadcast, cleared her desk. Ross and Brand were suspended. The Jimmy Savile crisis, like Sachsgate, has exposed cover-up and arrogance at the Beeb. But the Savile scandal is of far greater magnitude.
You cannot get worse than vulnerable girls being raped and abused on BBC premises. Brand and Ross broadcast five minutes of insensitive smut. Savile unleashed a tsunami of filth, in the words of the BBC’s own chairman. So why did we see swift action against Radio 2 in 2008 and absolutely nothing now? Where are the resignations? The BBC used to be called Aunty. More like a sleazy uncle now.
